Universities and Research Facilities
Universities in Konstanz, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Tübingen, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Ludwigsburg, Ulm and Freiburg research and develop new visualisation and simulation technologies for an impressive diversity of applications - in projects that often span several departments. The universities do not restrict their activities to basic research but also cooperate successfully with industry. Professors Keim , Reiterer and Deussen of the Department of Computer and Information Science in Konstanz, for example, are engaged in research into the manifold aspects of visualisation in collaboration with the local firm of in-GmbH. The significance of their applied research and close interaction with industrial partners is confirmed by various university spin-offs.
The establishment of visualisation centres, such as that headed by Professor Ertl at the University of Stuttgart, underlines the growing relevance of visualisation and simulation technologies. Baden-Württemberg's research landscape is rounded off by reputed organisations and institutions like the Fraunhofer Institutes for Industrial Engineering ( IAO ) and Manufacturing Engineering and Automation ( IPA ) in Stuttgart, which have designed successful visualisation and simulation technologies for industrial development and production processes, and the German Cancer Research Centre ( DKFZ ) in Heidelberg. At the latter, Professor Meinzer has effectively demonstrated how visualisation systems can be applied to improving diagnostic techniques as well as therapy planning and performance.
